23Things Kansas Wrap Up

I really cannot believe that 16 weeks has really passed since we started this journey!  I have been "forced" to come out of my shell a bit and explore so many new avenues in technology.  Each week came at such a timely moment.  I was able to implement the lesson right away.
My new delicious account saved me from losing tons of info on my personal computer and my work computer!
  • Google docs has saved Millie and I so much time and has been so convenient!
  • Screencasting allowed me to introduce Iluminar to our patrons and staff!
  • Slide sharing helped us create a fun presentation for local 5th graders!
  • Google Reads gave me an opportunity to review a book I had just read from our Children's Department!
  • Wikis were a way for us to add our Library to our County History!
I can't say enough about all the presenters!  Thank you all for the adventure and I look forward to exploring these resources even more!

  • The Library Presents....Steph and Millie!

What can we say...we're in demand...or maybe we are too demanding.  ;-)  Anyway, we had an average turnout at the Early Childhood Fair sponsored by Scott County Youth Partnership.  But, we were out there in our grass skirts and flower leis, with surfboards, pirate books, cool new brochures.  Thanks to those Think Outside the Barn Ladies , we are getting out of the library and into the community to reach those who haven't thought about their public library lately or even at all.

Millie and I also put together this pictoral slide show to present along with our Zoho slides for our 5th grade visit. You have to use your imagination on the naration...we had a good script.   I think we gained a room full of 5th grade fans with our techy show and our matching t-shirts :-)

Our next engagement...we are inviting YOU!  to stop in your library and take a tour, get to know your librarians, have a cup of coffee, chat with friends and neighbors...we've got all that and more @YOUR Library.

Scott County, Kansas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Millie and I edited the page under Scott City in Wikipedia. The entry was removed stating that it did not belong there and was not referenced. So, we added a Public Library entry under "Scott County, Kansas" with the reference! We will see if the info stays this time!

I found the editing confusing. It looked as though there was html involved. Luckily, we figured it out ok. Maybe other wikis are easier??

I like Shelfari for a personal use. I like how it is setup visually better. We use Librarything at work.

I started using Shelfari several months ago and really like how easy it was to set up and use. I had been looking for an application to keep track of all the books I've read and the ones I want to read. It is a handy reminder for me.

I tried Goodreads a while back, but I like Shelfari better. It's easy to follow and has pictures. :)

I chose Google Books because I had a Google account already. Easy to remember the one username and password.

    Slide Sharing

I have to admit, I was thinking of photo slides with this lesson.  Coincidentally, Millie and I were asked to give a presentation to our local 5th graders about our public library.  We chose to use Zoho because it was free and was very easy to use.  Now we have some nice slides to aid our talk.  We are looking forward to expanding this week's knowledge.

Kansas Library Association Conference 2010 Day 2

Kudos to Louise Greene and Rachel Miller of Rolling Prairie Library System, Decatur, Illinois!!!  What a great campaign they have going with their Think Outside the Barn @ Your Library (trademark).  The SWKLS ladies who attended are bursting to get to work with this library advocacy idea.  It's going to be great!!  So be on the lookout, all you SWKLS folks!  This idea is contagious!!

    Kansas Library Association Conference

Day 1 has been a blast!  I was in on two classes today: How to select Readers for the struggling reader and Managing Customers' Library Experience.  Both had wonderful, very knowledgeable presenters.  Both were full of more info than one should be allowed to cram into an hour and into one's brain!  We will be bringing back a wealth of knowledge to Scott County Library.

    Looking forward to tomorrow's sessions!

    Maybe??

It's not what I really want, but I plan to script it better soon. So, here is the Introduction with more to follow at another date.

    Screencasting

Like all good librarians, I thought for sure I would have "plenty" of time to get a new screencast done today!  Well, maybe not....  But I do have a start on my script.  My thanks to Sharon for the great info.  And to Charlene McGuire for recommending Screencast-O-Matic!    So, Coming Soon:   A screencast on how to search Scott County Library and Beyond with Iluminar!
